Family Resource Network has developed a comprehensive CORE training experience that will introduce new foster families to the Child Welfare System so they can become knowledgeable, nurturing, and informed caregivers to children in need. State and Federal requirements require new caregivers to complete 27 hours in their initial year. CORE training is 12 hours prior to licensure, including Mandated Reporting & The Prudent Parent Standard training listed below. Another 15 hours of training within three months of placement (after licensure) to be specific to the age and development of the children you wish to care. Of the 15 hours of training and prior to placement, 3 hours of Trauma Informed Parenting training and SAFE Sleep for Infants (if placement is for infants) is required.

Each additional year of licensure requires 20 hours of training for all standard foster or foster to adopt home applicants (each parent/caregiver). CPR and First Aid must be current at all times for licensed homes. Treatment Foster Homes must complete an additional 12 hours of training per year to maintain specialized licensure status.

CORE training* (12 hours) is offered for free to homes working with FRN, cost for class applies for outside families or adoption-only focused families getting licensed through Family Resource Network. Additional Core training hours are made up of the online classes listed below.

The Reasonable & Prudent Parent Standard*(1.5 hours) through Colorado Welfare Training System. Most children or youth in foster care will likely struggle to experience a “typical or normal” childhood. The Reasonable and Prudent Parent Standard was created to help caregivers explore ways to safety and risk in order to make decisions to create normalcy for children in their care. Required through FRN before placement:

Trauma Informed Parenting (3 hours)- Explore trauma and how trauma informed parenting practices can change the way you experience parenting when working with traumatized children.

SAFE Sleep: Creating Safe Sleep Environments for Infants.In the Safe Sleep Training you will learn “about creating safe sleeping environments for infants. You’ll explore customs and myths related to infant sleep along with recommended approaches and interventions associated with reductions in the risk of sleep-related infant deaths.
